There was a colored church down by the river crossing

I remember there was a colored church in the woods down by the river. If you passed by on the road that takes you over Sandy Island Bridge into Delaware, you could hear them singing on the Sabbath.  That was back in the ’70s.

It’s 1875.  Here.

The 1875 map of Caroline County shows 14 locations marked “Col. Ch” for the locations of “Colored Churches”.  Other churches are marked by denomination — mostly “ME. Ch” or “Cath. Ch”.

The map here lets you explore the locations of Caroline County historic black churches side-by-side with satellite imagery and the 1875 map.  Locations marked on satellite imagery are approximate.  A few are occupied by churches today; most are not.   None of these empty sites have been verified by field study.
