This article shows you how to use the
Choptank River Heritage
Family Search Map
to find names of persons who owned farms and businesses in Caroline County in the 1890s.

Open the map app.

Type a family name (last name) into the Search box.
Not case sensitive. “smith” and “Smith” find Smith.
You can use a partial name. “ever” finds Everngam, Everingham, Evers, etc.
Last names only. Most family names appear with first initial only in these census maps.

Click on one of the results to zoom to that grid square.

Turn map layers on or off.

With the historic map turned off, change the basemap to see what the neighborhood looks like today.

Frederick Douglass wrote:
“I am an Eastern Shoreman, with all that name implies. Eastern Shore corn and Eastern Shore pork gave me my muscle. I love Maryland and the Eastern Shore!”
“I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from Easton, in Talbot county, Maryland.”
